Error $0.25 1857 Seated Quarter Struck on Type 2 Tapered Planchet - ANACS VG10 Details
We can't say we've seen one of these before. While not widely acknowledged as an error type, it is rare.
This 1857 quarter was struck on a tapered planchet that still produced a somewhat filled rim because the edge had been mushroomed at the upsetting mill.
Note the voids on both sides are in the same location on opposite sides of the coin. A lot of material must have been missing from this planchet for such a deformity to occur.
Graded VG10 Details by ANACS, the coin has recovered pretty well from an old cleaning, with uniform antique color blanketing its surfaces.
A very neat error, especially for a long retired type such as a seated quarter.
