The 1880 Double Eagle is a difficult coin to locate, and many examples have been disrespected in pursuit of higher profits.
This particular piece still retains all evidence of a normal, unadulterated life in commerce and / or in the hands of a caring collector. There is mint luster all over the coin, blanketed in deep amber toning, and enough dirt in all of the right places to attest to its complete originality.
Graded AU55 circa 2004 by PCGS (Cert. No. 21533986), CAC has applied their Gold bean, indicating their belief the coin is under-graded.
